The Message-Digest algorithm 5 (MD5) is a hash function with a 128-bit hash value.

On most Unix systems the tools md5 or md5sum can be used to determine the MD5 hash of a file or device. md5deep can create MD5 hashes of whole directory trees.

MD5 is reported to have problems, so you might want to investigate other hash functions such as SHA-1 or SHA-256.
