Python is a high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language. Its design philosophy emphasizes code readability, and its syntax allows programmers to express concepts in fewer lines of code than would be possible in languages such as C++ or Java. The language provides constructs intended to enable clear programs on both a small and large scale.

In digital forensics, Python is slowly replacing Perl as the de facto language for short, single purpose written code. Scripts written in Python can often function on both Windows and *nix operating systems with no or minor modifications.

There are several FOSS and commercial implementation of Python interpreters.
